Donald Cerrone to change weight classesPosted: October 29, 2013
One of the more entertaining fighters on the UFC roster will be taking his talents south – to a lower weight class.
After a career crafted at lightweight, according to MMAMania.com, Donald Cerrone will drop to featherweight following his next fight. Losses to the elites in the lightweight division – Anthony Pettis, Nate Diaz, Rafael Dos Anjos – may have contributed to the move. Cerrone hints as much, “Why not? Go get the belt.”
Cerrone is a fighter who looks for finishes and goes about it at a high pace. That bodes well for a drop to a weight class chock-full of fleet athletes. Then again, Frankie Edgar’s greatest strength when he owned the lightweight division was his quickness factor – once he dropped to featherweight, he no longer had a distinct advantage over his opponents.
Of course, the switch will require some sacrifices. “No more Bud Light and Budweiser’s.”
Cerrone will meet Evan Dunham at UFC 167 on November 16.
