Dana White: “(Machida) wants to fight Vitor Belfort.”Posted: October 28, 2013
Following Lyoto Machida’s impressive debut at middleweight, UFC president, Dana White stated that the Brazilian has his sights set on a fellow countrymen – Vitor Belfort.
Speaking during the post-fight press conference, White mentioned his desire as a fan, not a promoter (which in his world, is the same thing), to see Machida take on Belfort. Machida was his usually evasive self and avoided the topic. However, White noted it wasn’t his idea – but Machida’s. When pressed by his boss further, Machida admitted he had requested the fight previously.
A bout between Machida and Belfort would certainly be a clash to determine a future number one contender, depending on what happens between Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva. Machida also said he would fight Silva – but only if it were for the title.
Were Machida-Belfort to be booked and Silva to win, that would be a win-win situation for the UFC.
